GTA VI's leaked slowdown might be a PS5 hardware ceiling, not a style choice

If you've checked X in the last four days, you've probably come across leaked gameplay footage of GTA VI. Plenty of users have bumped into these clips too, and some are starting to compare it to Red Dead Redemption II, another Rockstar game: longer animations, realistic weapon carrying, heavier animation transitions, more simulation-driven interactions... Most people treat this as a stylistic choice, something you can love or hate depending on taste, but for me it looks more like a hardware ceiling on the PS5. The tell isn't any single detail: it's how consistently that slower, heavier feel shows up across every clip that's leaked so far.

What people are noticing

Many users on X and Reddit are commenting on how realistic this new title looks: longer and more deliberate animations, characters that feel heavier, and, in general, something far less arcade-like than past entries in the series. This isn't just a feeling among these users, it's pattern. If you've played Red Dead Redemption II before, you can spot the resemblance right away: some sort of inspiration, or maybe something closer to a shared constraint.

What hardware has to do with this stylistic decision

The PS5 is an old console by now. Its CPU is a custom AMD Zen 2 chip with 8 cores and 16 threads, designed six years ago, and it shares its power budget with the GPU, which gets the larger share. Pushing more simultaneous NPC AI, higher traffic density, and heavier physics in a fast-paced game would mean a heavy load on the PS5, one the console isn't really built to sustain. Consequently, Rockstar had to make a choice: accept worse graphics, AI, and physics, or slow the game down enough that every component could keep pace without pushing the console into high temperatures. In the PS5, when the GPU runs near its clock ceiling, the CPU downclocks to keep the power budget balanced, and vice versa, so a game cannot max out both an arcade-fast simulation and RDNA-heavy visuals at once. The PS5 Pro isn't the solution either, since its CPU is barely any different from the base console's.

The PS5 is one of the few consoles to ship liquid metal as its CPU cooling solution, which makes its cooling system better than average for a sealed box. The limit is that even good cooling in a small, sealed enclosure forces a fixed, conservative power budget, and that budget is what caps how much simultaneous CPU and GPU work a game can demand at once. No amount of clever engineering around the heatsink changes the ceiling the power budget itself imposes.

Yet maybe this isn't the case at all, and Rockstar simply decided to make a more grounded, cinematic game this generation, independent of the hardware: a creative choice, not a constraint. Nonetheless, I feel like this decision makes GTA lose some of its essence, becoming more of a present-day Red Dead Redemption than an actual GTA game. That's why I lean toward the hardware constraint being the real explanation, even if Rockstar would rather frame it as a purely creative one.

Either way, the two explanations aren't fully separable. A studio rarely commits to a slower, heavier feel unless the hardware already nudges it in that direction, and then leans into it creatively once the constraint is there. If GTA VI really does play closer to Red Dead Redemption II than to GTA V, that's as much a leaked spec sheet for the PS5 as it is a leaked trailer for the game.
